RIBEIRAO PRETO, Brazil (July 22) -- University of Houston head coach Ray McCallum was an assistant coach for the USA Basketball Young Men's (20 and Under) team that finished second in the 2000 Confederation of Pan American Basketball Association's (COPABA) World Championship Qualifying Tournament on July 23 in in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil.

McCallum was an assistant coach under Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim and help lead the USA team to 4-1 record in the Tournament. The USA team was undefeated before being upended by Argentina, 92-77, in the championship game.

Duke's Jason Williams led USA with 17 points, but it wasn't enough to overtake Argentina, who shot 60 percent from the three-point line.

Also competing for the United States were two players from Conference USA, Bobby Simmons of DePaul and Kenny Satterfield of Cincinnati.

The United States, which had shot a stellar 51.7 percent from the field and 41.0 percent from three-point through its first four games, shot 36.2 percent (25-69 FGs) from the field and 30.0 percent (6-20 3pt FGs) from beyond the arc against Argentina. In contrast, Argentina shot 50.0 percent (28-56 FGs) from the field and 62.5 percent (10-16 3pt FGs) from three-point range. Argentina also out rebounded the U.S. 37-29.

With their second place finish the United State has qualified to compete in the 2001 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championship for Young Men, as the top three nations advance to next year's world competition, which will be held in Japan.
