Women's Basketball Earns No. 4 Seed In Conference USA Championship

Watch Houston in the C-USA Tournament (details) HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team earned the No. 4 seed in the 2008 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship and will face either No. 5 Southern Miss or No. 12 UCF Friday at 4:30 p.m. CST at New UCF Arena in Orlando, Fla. Houston (15-15) has never been the No. 4 seed in league tournament play. This is UH's fifth first-round bye since joining C-USA during the 1996-97 season. The Cougars also earned byes in 2001 (No. 3), 2002 (No. 2), 2004 (No. 1) and 2005 (No. 3). UH won the both the regular season and championship crowns in 2004. No. 19/23 UTEP earned the top overall seed. The Miners became the first team in C-USA history to complete the league regular season schedule without a loss (16-0) and enter on a 21-game winning streak. SMU is slotted in the No. 2 spot, followed by UAB as No. 3. Marshall is No. 6, followed by Memphis, East Carolina, Rice, Tulsa and Tulane. The Cougars defeated both the Golden Eagles and Knights this season. UH knocked off UCF in Orlando, 74-61, on Jan. 15 before beating Southern Miss 71-61 on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion on Jan. 20. If UH wins its quarterfinal matchup, it would face UTEP, Rice or East Carolina in the semifinals, Saturday at 4:30. Both semifinal matches will be carried by CSTV while the Championship game will air on ESPN2 at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
